The drain field (leach field) is where treated wastewater percolates into the soil. When it fails — due to age, overloading, or soil compaction — it requires professional repair or complete replacement.

Signs of Drain Field Failure

Watch for soggy or spongy areas over the drain field, unusually green or lush grass in the drain field area (sewage is fertilizing it), sewage odors outside, slow drains throughout the house, and standing water or sewage surfacing. If you notice any of these, call a septic professional immediately — early intervention can save thousands.

Repair vs. Replacement

Minor drain field issues may be fixable with non-invasive treatments. Terralift injects air and polystyrene pellets to fracture compacted soil. Aerobic remediation adds oxygen to break down biomat. Chemical treatments can restore soil absorption. If the field is severely clogged, collapsed, or undersized, full replacement is the only option. A new field is typically installed in a different location on your property.
